Many school buildings in the UK contain asbestos

It is important to be aware of asbestos and what it is

Asbestos was a very popular building material in schools for many years because of its durable characteristics. It can block noise as well as insulate buildings and adds strength to a range of other materials.

Using asbestos in construction was only banned in the UK in 1999, which means that many school buildings are likely to contain asbestos.

It’s a hidden danger that has led to the death of more than 200 teachers across the country since 2001 from mesothelioma, a form of cancer associated with asbestos, according to the National Education Union, (NEU – formerly the National Union of Teachers).

Asbestos fibres can only affect your health if they become damaged, either accidentally or during renovations. If this happens, the asbestos could release fibres, and these could harm your health. It is therefore crucial that you appoint a responsible person to create and monitor your management plan.

Our fully qualified surveyors can support you in the first steps of your management plan, with the provision of an in-depth quality survey.

The purpose of a survey is to help you manage the asbestos in your premises by providing accurate information on the type, location, amount and condition of the asbestos-containing material, and if the asbestos needs to be made safe.

We can guide you through every aspect of the survey findings and any ongoing management to ensure you and your business is fully compliant with all current legislation.
