ISO 45001 for Manufacturers: Is It Worth It?
ISO 45001 wins tenders, opens doors to bigger clients and cuts incidents. Here is what the standard is, how it fits your H&S duties, and the 7-phase route.
A customer audit or a framework deadline tends to land in your busiest week. Often it arrives the same way: a tender names ISO 45001, or a main contractor asks for it before adding you to an approved list. So the real question on the shop floor is a fair one. Is the certificate worth the effort?
For most manufacturers, yes. Here is what it is and what getting there actually involves.
What ISO 45001 is
ISO 45001 is the international standard for occupational health and safety management. It sets out a framework for managing the risks on your site, from machinery and guarding to COSHH, noise and hand-arm vibration. It replaced the old OHSAS 18001 standard, and the deadline to migrate passed in 2021.
A word on certificates. No consultant can award one. ISO 45001 certificates come from an independent, UKAS-accredited certification body that audits your business separately. Why manufacturers pursue it
Three reasons come up again and again:
- Tenders and approved lists. More customers and frameworks now name ISO 45001 as a condition of bidding. No certificate, no place on the list.
- Bigger clients. Larger buyers want an audited management system, not a folder of policies. ISO 45001 is the proof they recognise.
- Fewer incidents. A system that puts the right controls on the floor, written so operators will actually follow them, means fewer stoppages and fewer claims. HAVS is irreversible and the claims are expensive. Prevention pays.
How it fits your existing H&S duties
You already carry duties under the law: PUWER for work equipment, COSHH for substances, the noise and vibration regulations, RIDDOR for reporting. ISO 45001 does not add a separate rulebook on top. It organises the work you should already be doing into a system you can prove.
That is why running safety and ISO together is efficient. The risk assessments, controls and records that keep you legally compliant are most of what a 45001 system needs. One worth noting: ISO 45001 sits alongside SSIP, it does not replace it. SSIP is a UK procurement gateway. ISO 45001 is the audited system larger clients want on top.
The 7-phase journey to certification
