What would an HSE incident actually cost you?

People picture the fine and stop there. The fine is rarely the biggest number. Between the HSE's hourly charge, the investigation, the sick pay, the cover, the insurance excess and the days you spend dealing with it, the real cost of one incident runs far higher than most owners assume. Put your numbers in and see it.

What could poor health & safety really cost you?

A rough, transparent estimate of the direct cost of workplace incidents — before fines, claims or lost contracts.

Estimated direct cost a year
£3,300

WHAT GOES INTO THE NUMBER

Most people are surprised by how the smaller costs stack up around the headline fine.

The estimate adds up the costs that actually land after an incident, whether or not there's a prosecution. Three inputs drive it: your sector, your headcount and the type of incident.

HSE Fee for Intervention

Charged at £174 per hour once a material breach is found, covering the inspector's time investigating, writing up and following it through. A single investigation can run to many hours, so the bill mounts quickly.

Investigation time, pulled off paid work

Yours and your team's. Hours spent dealing with the incident are hours off the job that pays the bills, and they don't come back.

Sick pay and cover

Sick pay for the injured employee, plus the cover you bring in to keep the job moving while they're off. Both scale with the size of your team.

Insurance excess and premium rise

The excess you pay on the claim, and the premium increase that often follows for years afterwards. Easy to forget, hard to ignore once it lands.

QUESTIONS

Common questions

What is the HSE Fee for Intervention?
Fee for Intervention (FFI) is the HSE's power to recover its costs from a business found to be in material breach of health and safety law. It is charged at £174 per hour, covering the inspector's time investigating, writing up and following the breach through. One case can run to many hours, so the bill mounts quickly.
Is this calculator a real quote or an estimate?
It is an estimate, built on typical cost ranges for each sector and incident type, including the £174/hr FFI rate. Your actual cost depends on the specifics, but the model gives you a realistic order of magnitude rather than a guess.
Why is there no email form on this one?
Because the number is most useful to you, right now, on screen. We would rather you got a straight answer than hit a wall. If you want to talk it through afterwards, that is your call, not a condition.
The estimate looks high. Is it really that expensive?
The fine is usually the smallest part. Investigation time, sick pay, cover and an insurance excess add up fast, and they land whether or not there is a prosecution. That is exactly why the full cost surprises people.
